The story.

The story.

Lava Coliving is a coliving space in the Azores, Portugal, built for digital nomads and remote workers. It offers community, coworking spaces, and long-term stays.

When the founder approached me, the business relied heavily on Coliving.com, Airbnb & Booking.com for bookings. These platforms take fees on every stay and, more importantly, attracting the wrong audience.

Short-term tourists were booking a few nights at a time. That was never the vision. The goal was to host remote workers and digital nomads staying longer, integrating into the community.

The website existed, but it was not built to convert or to rank. Guests could not easily book directly, and the positioning did not clearly speak to the intended audience.

The business did not have a strategy. It was dependent on third-party platforms.

The challenge.

The challenge.

The whole user experience of the original website was confusing.

Guests could not book directly through the site. Instead, there was a form that required back and forth communication through emails.

If Lava Coliving wanted to attract digital nomads and remote workers directly, it needed to:

  • have a functioning website, making booking simple & frictionless

  • clearly communicate what a coliving is & what it offers

  • show up in search results for the right keywords

  • filter out short-term tourists

The strategy.

The strategy.

First, I secured a new domain that clearly reflected the concept: lavacoliving.com

The name immediately communicates what the business is about. That matters for both branding and search.

Then I built a website from scratch using WebFlow as the CMS, aligning it with SEO best practices from the ground up.

The work included:

The work included:

  • full keyword research focused on digital nomads & remote workers

  • repositioning the messaging around coliving, coworking & community

  • clean site structure for indexing, crawlability & ranking

  • on-page optimisation & technical SEO foundations

  • installing a booking engine

  • creating blog content targeting people staying long-term in the Azores

The booking engine I used was: Mangobeds. Visitors could check availability and secure their stay directly.

As the right audience started finding the website, the minimum stay was extended to 2 weeks.

That naturally filtered out short-term tourists & aligned the guest profile with the original vision of the buisness.

Within a few months, the website began gaining organic traction.

Traffic increased steadily as pages started ranking for relevant search terms related to coliving in the Azores and Portugal for digital nomads.

Soon after:

  • bookings shifted from 3rd-party platforms to direct bookings

  • outranking its main competitors: Dwell azores & Novovento coliving

  • website ranks on the first page of Google for its targeted search terms & is also featured in AI overviews

Eventually, Lava Coliving started taking bookings directly through the website.
